The ten-day festival is focused on live, public theatre as well as music and visual arts. This festival was founded in 1981 by Joop Mulder, then owner of café De Stoep in Midsland.

In 1982 begonnen als klein straattheater festival is het uitgegroeid tot een divers cultureel festival met zo'n 55.000 bezoekers per jaar. Er is nog steeds straattheater te zien, maar het accent is verschoven naar locatietheater, muziek en beeldende kunst.

The Oerol Tradition. Joop Mulder became the barkeeper of Café de Stoep on the island of Terschelling in the early 1970s. Mulder organized monthly concerts accompanied by poetry, theater, and visual arts and, in June 1982, he created the first Oerol street festival. Oerol reminds us that life is a stage and the permeable boundary between actor.
